On Thursday we were slightly disappointed with the efforts of both our runners at Newbury. We started the afternoon off with ON THE HUH who headed into the race in good form. He travelled well for the early part of the race and when asked for his effort he did not really pick up. He came into the race on the back of a second last time at Doncaster on good to soft ground and it looked as though the drying conditions had gone against him here. Later on the card STRAIT OF MAGELLAN headed into the race with three quick runs in a fortnight under his belt, which looked to have taken their toll on him. He certainly did not look the same horse that won at Bath previously and we will see how he is before making further plans for him.
On Friday we headed to Sandown where we were running a nice two-year-old maiden called MACHINE LEARNER. He ran with great encouragement and did very well to finish where he did having had only one behind him for much of the race. He is certainly one who will come on for the run and looks a nice colt. Later on the card BANDITRY gave a real pleasing effort stepping up in trip for the first time. He was taking his chance on much faster ground than he had encountered before, and tracked the winner throughout the race. He was asked for his effort at the three pole and kept on well under pressure all the way to the line, never quite looking like getting to the favourite. He is in the July Sales and hopefully we will be able to get a win out of him, possibly back on an easier surface before then. We rounded the afternoon off with ONE MAN ARMY who again failed to impress after his Southwell win. Settled towards the rear he looked to be taking quite a keen hold and when asked for his effort he did not really find anything. He is maybe another, who will act better on softer ground.
Yesterday after the withdrawal of THATCHEREEN at Chester due to the ground it left us with a blank day. We return to the action today at Doncaster and start the afternoon off with recent Leicester winner SAMPERA taking her chance. She looks to have come out of that race well and the application of the visor certainly helped her chances last time. Hopefully she can be successful again which can only enhance her profile at the July Sales. Later on the card ROSECOMB makes a return to the track. She did not run as well as expected on her first start at Newmarket and it was felt that she would be better suited over seven furlongs. Hopefully with the step up in trip today she will give a better effort of herself. We round off the afternoon with MY STRATEGY who has proved a real consistent sort this season. He goes into the race with conditions in his favour and will be ridden by Louis Steward who is thankfully getting some winners on the board which is fantastic news.
We have declared NIBLAWI tomorrow at Carlisle in what we were hoping would be weak maiden for him to break his maiden tag. It has turned out to be a tough little contest now, but on the back of his Chepstow run you would have to give him a chance. A drop of rain would certainly help his chances, but like a lot of the tracks the wet weather seems to be missing them.
Today the horses worked on the watered gallop and the weather was filthy. The quality is not great but at least you can see them working.
